Monday Memo

From the Director’s Desk:
I don’t know about you but I am craving BBQ this a.m.!  On behalf of the faculty and the precious children, we thank you for the amazing amount of work that only 21 sets of parents put in to ensure a successful fundraising event!  It was most impressive!  Particular thanks to Don and Janene Davison for their incredible leadership, andto Jody Wood for her ticket sale-a-rama!  To the men of meat, the BBQ was delicious; to the women of beans, my husband said he wants the recipe.  To the Mims/Aubins, Benards, Boullions, Bradleys, the Mike Davisons, Densons, Donlons, Galloways, Georges, Havards, Howreys, McClures, Patels, Smiths, Valbuenas, Vieaus, Weathers, Wessales, and Wilbers,  we think you are simply the greatest!

For those who couldn’t hear or were outside, Matt Havard was selected as PARENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR!  Thanks, Matt, for all you have done to keep us “online” and for installing our laptops!  Your commitment to this is critical to our students’ enhanced educational opportunities!  Stop by and see the plaque where Matt’s name is the first of many “Parents of the Year!”

Monday Memo

From the Director’s Desk:

Recently, several children have mentioned wanting a “no shoe day” at school.  It reminded me of an article I read about an Alabama physician, Dr. Robert Parker (Cynthia Smith knew him!).  He promoted no shoes in grades k-3 as a way for children to avoid sickenss.  His theory was that parents bundled up their children too much in cold weather which made them sweat and then get sick.  His own son, who attended that school, went barefoot and never had a cold.  The shoeless custon survives to this day in that school, and even survived the school’s implementation of uniforms.  One third grade teacher reports that barefoot kids never get sick.  Now it appears, however, that the original reason for not wearing shoes has been forgotten and it’s now all about not having to tie shoelaces.

I love this story, as it reminded me how often in life we can be swept away by cultural or media promoted trends–velcro, anyone?!?  How easily we can be convinced with the best of intentions that something is acceptable.  Having said that, while I have to say no to entire school year of no shoes, I can say yes to one day to celebrate carefree feet!  Just remember, “no” can and should be considered a term of endearment or a hug that says how much you love your child.  Only then will they learn to “tie their shoes” on their own!

“No Shoe Day” will be Wednesday, April 27th!  Wear ‘em to school, lunch, recess; ditch ‘em in between!

Students will be continuing their jump rope lessons.

Odds & Ends:

  • Please note the change in the calendar; the last day of school will be Friday, May 27th, instead of school on Monday, Memorial Day, and Tuesday.  Many parents have already indicated that they would already be on vacation.  Field Day is Thursday, May 26, and we will return to school for hot dog cook out on the playground.  Friday, May 27th, will be Awards Day–no graduation until next year, as we will have sixth graders!
  • Reminder that re-enrollment contracts are due Monday, May 2nd!  Any financial aid applications are past due!
  • Calendar is set for next year; you will receive a copy with your child’s last report card.
  • Conference sign-up sheets have been posted on the glass door–be sure to sign up!
